Knowledge Economy

Over the coming years, the quantum and quality of jobs in the Liverpool city region's economy is expected to grow particularly strongly in a number of well defined sectors.  These are also the areas where co-ordinated effort will be applied to create the conditions to allow this growth to happen more quickly and strongly.

Developments within and around the port area are a key focus of attention, whilst ensuring that the huge success of Liverpool's Capital of Culture year in 2008 continues to be built upon is also essential.  Developments in the green technology sector will also be important, not least given the proposed wind farm developments in the Irish Sea and the potential link up with Cammell Laird.  However, there is a recognition that the greatest potential in delivering high quality, high value jobs lies in exploiting the city region's key knowledge economy research and company strengths, particularly in the areas of lifesciences, IT and digital technologies, and advanced manufacturing.  Detailed action plans have been prepared for each of these sectors by key city institutions.  Liverpool Science Park has also ensured that its offer can support these sectors, not least by entering the commercial laboratory market, so that companies, whether they are home grown or from outside the area, looking to benefit from proximity to these world class assets, can be supported.
