About Liverpool Science Park
History

Liverpool Science Park Innovation Centre 1 (ic1) is located at the foot of the steps of the Metropolitan Cathedral. Whilst Innovation Centre 2 is located alongside the Cathedral Crypt. The site has long been a site of innovation and scientific development, in 1948 The University of Liverpool Department of Particle Physics was located on the very same site where Innovation Centre 1 now stands. The Department of Particle Physics was involved in the research and development of the largest cyclotron in Western Europe. One of the most exciting emergent technologies of its time, the cyclotron allowed scientists to research the atom and to carry out ground breaking revolutionary research in particle physics. The cyclotron, which was too radioactive to remain above ground, is now buried under the Otters Pool promenade. For almost sixty years, the site at Mount Pleasant has been at the forefront of emergent sciences and technologies, and the Centres carry on this tradition, bringing fresh scientific and technological developments to the regione
