Liverpool hosts Great Science event

Leading scientists and entrepreneurs descended on Liverpool for a bespoke business workshop aimed at supporting the region's thriving life sciences sector.

Over 80 businesses attended the 'From great science to successful company and exit' at Liverpool Science Park this week, which explored key aspects of a high-growth company's journey, from developing scientific ideas through to preparing a business for sale.

The free event, hosted by multi award-winning science writer and broadcaster Vivienne Parry, featured interactive presentations from a wealth of leading companies including London Stock Exchange, AstraZeneca, and SPARK Impact, managers of the £25M NorthWest Fund for Biomedical.

The life sciences sector is a major contributor to Liverpool's economy, employing over 4,000 people and generating turnover of around £250M a year.

Chloe Young, business development director at Liverpool Science Park, said: "The event proved extremely popular and I think everybody, regardless of the stage their business is at, went away with some really useful tips. As a result of its success we are looking to host similar events in the future.  These will be even more relevant as we are due to open our first commercial laboratories in September and shortly hope to secure the funding for a third building, which will have further laboratories to help support Liverpool's growing knowledge economy."

The 'From great science to successful company and exit' event, which took place on Tuesday June 14 2011, is part of Liverpool Science Park's hugely popular knowledge economy sector specific events programme.

Speakers and panelists included: Wellcome Trust, Envestors, Spark Impact, Baker Tilly, WP Thompson, Weightmans LLP, London Stock Exchange, Merseyside Special Investment Fund, David Anwyl Associates Executive Search, Flintloque Management Systems Ltd, Uniform, AstraZeneca.
