Spotlight On … Frederiks Hope Street

Dry January has been getting the better of us this month so we thought we'd cheer ourselves up by sitting down with Laura from Frederiks on Hope Street, one of the area's finest purveyors of all things alcoholic!

Since it first opened a few years back, Frederiks quickly established itself as one of our favourite places to escape the office to. Serving delicious food and with a back bar to die for, we thought we’d spend a bit of time with their Marketing Manager Laura to find out a little more about what makes Frederiks so special.

Hi Laura, How are you? Thank you for sitting down with us! Let’s start with the basics, how long has Frederiks been open?

That’s no problem at all! We’ve been open for just over 5 years. We’re growing year on year but we still have our lovely regular customers that we had from day 1!

That’s really good to see! Can you tell us a little about the history of Frederiks and a little about what you offer?

It was designed by the team behind Camp and Furnace! If you haven’t been in yet, we have sleek teak panelling above a concrete plinth with a really cosy fireplace, inviting sofas, an original yellow brick Victorian wall and a long bull nose zinc bar. We’re the epitome of contemporary cool – our beer font alone is worth the visit! We’ve taken a unique approach to bar culture in Liverpool with our selection of wheat beers, craft ales, sumptuous cocktails, carefully selected wines, whiskeys and gins by offering up creative plates of transatlantic fayre.

Our Booklyn inspired menu contains a series of small plates with bold, intricate flavours including mac ‘n’ cheese, pulled pork, maple-bourbon syrup and waffle stack & then of course our Sunday Lunch! Served up from Noon till 9pm – seven days a week, Frederiks is bar dining at it’s best. I’ll be honest, our Sunday Lunch is one of the best in the city (or so we’ve heard from quite a few different people!).

We also have ‘The Pillbox’  – a soundproof events, performance and party space which aims to embellish Hope Street’s rich cultural diversity and is regularly being booked up for private parties & corporate events.

Okay, it’s 12 o’clock on a Thursday and I’m in a rush – what would you recommend to grab at lunch from Frederiks?

Personally I always go for the stone baked pizzas but we are about to reintroduce our small plates menu which will be to die for! One of our lunch staples, Soup & a Sandwich, is just £6 and available to eat in or take away, perfect for lunch on the go!

That sounds like a bit of me! What is your most popular food available?

Our Sunday Lunch is our most popular food option – the Beef Brisket or the vegan Nut Roast served with all the trimmings and all lovingly made by our in house kitchen team in particular! It is two courses just £16.95 or three courses for £19.95.

Bargain that! In terms of ale, what would you suggest?

I’d go for a nice Blue Moon served with a wedge of fresh orange or one of our many Gin Serves – Larios Pink Gin, Rose Lemonade & Strawberries – they’re all delicious!

I’m with you on the Blue Moon! Last time we spoke you mentioned the Hope Street Community Interest Company – what is your involvement with the C.I.C.?

I sit on the C.I.C. representing Frederiks, working with the other Hope Street stakeholders. We are working towards creating a Hope Street Brand which is working towards our mission to make Hope Street a destination. We are situated on what we believe is the most cultural street in the city and we are very proud to welcome tourists and locals alike, showing them what we have to offer. We are also working to try and animate the area and introduce a programme of events which would attract more people to the area.

We absolutely love Hope Street here – it’s great seeing the work that you’re doing with the C.I.C.. On to you, what is your role at Frederiks and how can you help our community members?

I am the Marketing Manager for Frederiks. As well as a looking after the brand and marketing activity, both on & offline, I work to drive the business and ensure we are both a friendly neighbourhood hangout as well as a commercial success. In terms of people based at the Park, we have already introduced our ‘Friend of Fred’ offer – 20% off food Monday till Friday, 12-5pm. I can also assistwith any events or meetings spaces outside of the Park you may need. I’m available to plan large team dinners, drinks or parties and best of all – we don’t charge a hire fee!

That’s some offer right there! How long have you been at Frederiks?

I have been with Frederiks for 4 years, but worked for Elaine Clarke (Frederik’s owner and local entrepreneur), who is also a very close friend, for over 6 years.

I’d hate to think how much I’ve spent in places owned by Elaine in the last few years! So, when you’re not in work what do you get up to in your spare time?

I love yoga, walking my dog, Gus, and going for meals with my boyfriend, Neil. Up until October, you would have found me in Frederiks on Tuesdays enjoying the Jazz and a Malbec but I’m about to have my first baby this year so I’m just working my way through our food menu instead!

Congratulations – that’s amazing news! We know that you’re involved in the Hope Street C.I.C. but what else do you love about the local area?

I absolutely love the Georgian Quarter! Having lived in Falkner square for 8 years, I really feel like it’s my home land! There are theatres, restaurants, bars and cathedrals, not to mention the green spaces and unbelievable Georgian Architecture. I really think of anywhere as perfect as Hope Street and it’s surrounding neighbourhood.

I agree – I’ve always felt lucky to live, study and work around here! And finally, if you didn’t work in the bar and restaurant industry, what would you be doing?

I really can’t imagine not working in this industry, but, as long as I was chatting to people and having a creative output everyday, I’m sure I could do pretty much anything! Ask me that again in 5 months when the baby comes!

We’ll hold you to that!

A huge thank you to Laura for taking time out of her busy schedule to meet up with us. We’re sure you’ll all join us in wishing Laura the best of luck as she gets ready to become a mother for the first time!

We’ve recently linked up with Frederiks to trial a new Citrus IPA blend, with free samples to arrive at the Park imminently (we’re too good to you really!) Park Community members can also benefit from 20% off at Frederiks on food, Monday through Friday between 12 and 5pm. If you’d like to get involved with this discount, please speak to a member of our team about the LSP Community Card.

Laura and the Frederiks’ team are always available to help you plan the perfect off campus event. You can reach Laura on 0151 708 9574 or at events@frederikshopestreet.com
